Weight loss and fitness have turned into multibillion dollar industries worldwide. Sorting through all of the noise in the fitness world may seem daunting to the beginner, but like everything else in this world it need not be so complicated.

There are a couple of necessary pieces of equipment that you need to get in shape and multiple tiers of equipment above the minimum that will assist you in your new quest to get in shape.

The most essential piece of fitness equipment is a good pair of shoes. With a good pair of shoes the world is open to you, you can walk, run, play sports, go to the gym, the track, etc. Told you it would be simple. I believe in easy, shoes are easy, not always cheap, but my guess is that you already own at least one decent pair of shoes.

Next, I would suggest things that allows you vary your workouts a little bit, a bike, skates, basic pieces of equipment that are useful, multifunctional, and long lasting.

I have not even scratched the surface of weights or gym memberships at this point because I believe it is fully possible to be in excellent physical condition without ever going to the gym or doing anything more than bodyweight exercises. Any snake oil salesman that tells you different is steering you in the direction of adding more complexity, difficulty, and expense to your fitness experience.

With regard to the last paragraph I will suggest joining a gym, investing in a simple set of dumbbells or both. Look for a gym that does not require contracts and does not nickel and dime you. Dumbbells or other free weights are not always cheap but if you buy the old fashioned iron weights, your great grandkids may be using them some day, they are virtually indestructible and can be used for countless exercises.

Above and beyond any of these simple products all else is personal preference. I would however steer away from anything that looks like it may break, comes with an owners manual, or requires maintenance. Keep it simple, make it easy and integrate these new habits into your daily lifestyle.

In a day when computer programs analyze movement patterns and scales tell you your body fat percentage some things remain the same. Obtaining all of the necessities to get in shape can cost less than 0 and setting up a fabulous home gym can easily cost less than 0. Getting in shape does not have to be expensive or time consuming and the latest infomercial weight loss machine will not burn as many calories as a run on the beach.
